Abstract

This investigation presents research on the authorship and origin of a set of three painted wooden panels representing scenes containing John the Baptist from the Catedral de Barcelona and donated by the canon Lluís de Despujol. Bibliographical research revealed that he acquired the paintings during the 1930s or 1940s from the parish church of Ambel, in Zaragoza (Spain), and the works have been attributed to the painter Juan Fernández Rodríguez. The research focuses on Despujol’s role in preserving Spain’s religious art heritage during the Spanish Civil War.
